At its height, the refugee camp in Idomeni held nearly 15,000 before it was cleared out in late May 2016. Idomeni became a flashpoint in the refugee crisis when Macedonia (FYROM) closed its borders on March 9, 2016.

In early March, there was a daily quota on how many refugees could pass into Macedonia (FYROM). That ended when Macedonia (FYROM) declared a state of emergency on March 9.

Refugees used their phones to connect with loved ones and to keep themselves updated on the crisis. In Idomeni, free Wi-Fi was available thanks to the efforts of Ilias Papadopoulos, a Greek electrical engineer who built a network in the camp.
